Shaping the Future of FPS

This past year the Forest Products Society embarked on a Visioning and Strategic Planning effort to craft a pathway for our future. We held two open listening sessions; one in June 2010 associated with our International Convention, and another in November at the Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, Wisconsin. These public sessions were attended by FPS members in person or via web and telephone.

The Executive Board is moving forward with seeking member input on new draft Vision and Mission statements during the next two months (see story below). These statements reflect a future Society that will focus broadly on wood, but also on other renewable materials; be a more internationally active and engaged organization; and coordinate with other global organizations focused on wood and renewable resources to have greater impact on shaping public opinion and natural resource policy.

New FPS Vision and Mission

The discussions and information gathered through the Visioning and Strategic Planning Process (see story above) have made it clear that if FPS is to be successful in the long term, the organization must change. This change includes a broadening of the Society's scope, starting with an expansion of its Vision and Mission.

Early this month, the Executive Board of the Society approved new Vision and Mission statements that resulted from this dialogue and the input of many thoughtful individuals who took part in the process. The Executive Board is now seeking feedback on those statements through the Shaping the Future Website. The website contains the new Vision and Mission, as well as results from the listening sessions and other background information. We encourage you to submit your comments about the new Vision and Mission.

Efforts are underway at colleges and universities around the US to introduce energy conservation and sustainable design strategies in order to reduce their overall carbon-based emissions. This 1-hour webinar will present case studies from the University of Missouri at Columbia, which is using a biomass boiler to generate a portion of its energy, and the University of Wisconsin at Madison, which recently broke ground on a combined heating and power plant.
